Do You Need a New ESTA After Renewing Your Passport?

Traveller reviewing passport records before a United States trip

Yes. CBP says a traveler needs a new ESTA authorization if they are issued a new passport.

Short answer: if your passport changes, do not treat the old ESTA as transferable. Keep the old passport, old ESTA, new passport, new ESTA application, and U.S. trip records separate. ESTA validity, Visa Waiver Program admission days, I-94 records, and U.S. tax day counting are different records.

Do you need a new ESTA after a new passport?

Yes.

CBP says a new ESTA authorization may be required when the traveler is issued a new passport. CBP also says ESTA approvals are typically valid for two years or until the applicant's passport expires, whichever comes first.

That means passport renewal is not just a document housekeeping issue. The ESTA record is tied to the passport details used for the authorization.

If you renew your passport before travelling to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, plan for a new ESTA application before the trip.

What other changes can require a new ESTA?

CBP lists several circumstances where a new ESTA authorization may be required:

  • new passport
  • name change
  • country of citizenship change
  • changed answers to ESTA application questions that require a yes or no answer

CBP's ESTA overview also lists new passport, name change, country of citizenship change, and changed circumstances as new-authorization triggers.

The practical rule is simple: when the identity, citizenship, passport, or eligibility facts behind the original ESTA change, do not assume the old record still works for travel.

Can you edit passport details on an existing ESTA?

Do not rely on that.

CBP says most ESTA information can be updated through the status-check workflow, but passport details, country of citizenship, and date of birth require a new application.

CBP's correction guidance also says that if an applicant made a mistake on passport or biographical information, they need to submit a new application.

For recordkeeping, keep:

  • old passport number and expiry date
  • old ESTA application number, if available
  • new passport number and expiry date
  • date the new ESTA application was submitted
  • date the new ESTA was approved, denied, or left pending
  • trip dates connected to the new authorization

Do not rewrite your travel history as if the old passport never existed. Keep the chain clear.

Does a new passport reset your U.S. visitor days?

No. Do not mix those clocks.

A new passport can require a new ESTA authorization, but that does not mean it resets any U.S. visitor-day question, admission record, I-94 history, or tax-day count.

CBP says an approved ESTA is not a guarantee of admission to the United States. CBP also says approved ESTA applications are valid for multiple trips during the validity period, but when travelling with an approved ESTA you may only stay for up to 90 days at a time under the Visa Waiver Program.

That creates separate records:

RecordWhat it answers
PassportWhich travel document you used
ESTA authorizationWhether you have travel authorization for VWP travel
Admission / I-94 recordWhat CBP recorded for that U.S. entry
VWP stay clockHow the up-to-90-day visit is being treated
U.S. tax day countWhether U.S. physical presence may matter for tax residency

Keep those separate even if the same trip touches all of them.

Does ESTA validity mean you can stay for two years?

No.

CBP says ESTA approvals are typically valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. That validity period is about travel authorization, not permission to remain in the United States for two years.

CBP says Visa Waiver Program travel with an approved ESTA allows stays of up to 90 days at a time, subject to admission.

If your ESTA is valid for two years, it may support multiple trips during that authorization period. It does not turn each trip into a two-year U.S. stay.

What if your ESTA expires while you are in the United States?

CBP says ESTA expiry while you are in the United States does not affect your departure.

That does not mean old authorizations can be extended. CBP says existing authorizations cannot be extended and that a new application is needed.

Keep this distinction in your records:

  • ESTA expiration date
  • U.S. entry date
  • admitted-until or I-94 record, if applicable
  • U.S. exit date
  • next planned travel date
  • date any new ESTA application was submitted

If your passport expires, the ESTA validity can end sooner than the two-year period. Treat passport expiry and ESTA expiry as linked planning dates.

How should you record a passport renewal before U.S. travel?

Use a short passport-change log.

FieldWhat to record
Old passportnumber, issuing country, expiry date
Old ESTAapplication number, approval date, expiration date
New passportnumber, issuing country, issue date, expiry date
New ESTAsubmission date, result, expiration date
First trip after renewalairline or route, U.S. entry date, admission record
Notesname/citizenship changes or ESTA-answer changes, if any

The goal is not to store sensitive details casually. Store only what you need, keep it private, and make sure the records match the documents you used.

How is ESTA different from U.S. tax day counting?

ESTA is a travel-authorization record. U.S. tax day counting is a different system.

The IRS substantial presence test looks at U.S. physical presence across the current year and the prior two years using a weighted formula. The IRS also says a person is generally treated as present in the United States on any day they are physically present in the country at any time during the day, subject to listed exceptions.

That means a U.S. trip can matter in two different ways:

  • CBP and VWP records for travel authorization and admission
  • IRS day records for U.S. tax-residence review

A new ESTA does not erase U.S. presence days. A new passport does not erase prior U.S. trips. Keep the travel record continuous across passport changes.
