Sri Lanka's 2026 tourist ETA update is easy to misread.

The Department of Immigration and Emigration page updated August 20, 2026 says that, with effect from May 25, 2026, nationals of 40 countries are eligible to obtain a tourist visa, or ETA, free of charge for a period of 30 days. The same page says all foreign nationals, including nationals of the listed countries, must obtain an ETA before arrival.

Short answer: for listed travelers, the charge may be waived, but the ETA step still matters. Track the ETA type, first arrival, 30-day validity, double-entry use, and any extension application separately from Sri Lanka's digital-nomad visa.

What changed in 2026?

Sri Lanka's immigration authority says nationals of 40 listed countries are eligible to obtain a tourist visa, or ETA, free of charge for 30 days under an arrangement effective May 25, 2026.

The source page is the controlling page for the country list. Do not rely on summaries, screenshots, or old travel blogs if your passport is near the eligibility boundary.

Before travel, check:

  • whether your nationality appears on the current official list
  • whether the ETA application page shows the same treatment
  • whether your trip is tourism, not work or residence
  • whether the page has changed since your last check

This guide does not reproduce the full country list because that list can change. Use the official immigration page before booking or applying.

Does free mean no ETA?

No.

Sri Lanka's immigration page says all foreign nationals, including nationals of the 40 listed countries and reciprocal countries, must obtain an ETA before arrival.

That is the practical distinction. "Free of charge" is not the same as "no pre-arrival record." Keep the ETA confirmation with your trip file and record the passport used for the application.

How long is the tourist ETA stay?

For the 40-country arrangement, the immigration page describes a tourist visa, or ETA, free of charge for 30 days.

The same page says tourists under the scheme are entitled to a tourist visa, or ETA, valid for 30 days, with a double-entry facility permitted from the date of first arrival in Sri Lanka within the 30-day validity period. The page also notes that Maldivian nationals receive 90 days, so do not assume every nationality is treated the same.

Track:

  • ETA approval date
  • passport used
  • first Sri Lanka arrival date
  • 30-day validity period
  • each entry and exit
  • whether a second entry has been used
  • planned departure date

The double-entry facility is not a reason to ignore the 30-day clock.

Can a stay beyond 30 days be extended?

Sri Lanka's immigration page says applicants who obtained a free visa and wish to remain beyond 30 days may apply for a visa extension upon payment of the applicable visa fee.

That is not an approval promise. Treat extension as a separate application and keep:

  • extension application date
  • payment record
  • approval or refusal record
  • new permitted-stay date, if approved
  • official source checked date

If your trip depends on an extension, check the current official process before relying on a travel plan.

Is this the same as Sri Lanka's Digital Nomad Visa?

No.

Sri Lanka's tourist ETA and Sri Lanka's Digital Nomad residence visa are different records. Tourist ETA is for tourism. The Digital Nomad Visa category appears in separate immigration material and has different requirements, duration, income, document, and work boundaries.

Do not merge them in your notes.

Keep separate fields for:

  • tourist ETA or residence visa
  • application reference
  • validity period
  • permitted activities
  • entry and exit dates
  • source checked date
  • extension or renewal notes

If you plan to work remotely from Sri Lanka, read the current Digital Nomad Visa material and speak with a qualified professional before relying on tourist-entry language.
