UK ETA 2026: Rules, Cost, and Checklist for Frequent Travelers
The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation became mandatory for visitors from 85 nationalities on 25 February 2026. The current list has changed since then. If you travel to the UK without a visa and you are not British or Irish, check GOV.UK before you book.
This guide covers who needs one, how to apply, what it costs, how long it lasts, and what frequent travelers should know.
What Is a UK ETA?
A UK ETA is a digital pre-travel permission linked to your passport. It does not replace a visa. It applies to nationals from countries that do not need a visa to visit the UK but are not British or Irish.
The ETA is checked before you board. Airlines and transport carriers verify ETA status at check-in. You will not be allowed to board without it.
European nationals were required to hold an ETA from 2 April 2025. Full mandatory enforcement for non-visa nationals followed on 25 February 2026. GOV.UK said 85 nationalities were legally required to have an ETA on that enforcement date.
Who Needs a UK ETA?
You need an ETA if your passport nationality is currently listed by GOV.UK and you are traveling to the UK for tourism, business, or certain transit routes.
You do NOT need an ETA if you are:
- A British passport holder
- An Irish passport holder
- A British National (Overseas) passport holder
- A holder of a valid UK visa
- Someone with permission to live, work, or study in the UK
If you need a visa to enter the UK, the ETA does not apply to you. The ETA is for visa-exempt travelers only.
Taiwan passport holders with an identification card number are eligible to apply.
Eligibility changes often. Some countries have been removed from ETA eligibility. Colombia was removed in November 2024. Nauru in December 2025. Botswana in October 2025. Nicaragua and St Lucia in March 2026. If you were previously eligible, confirm your current status at GOV.UK before applying.
How to Apply
Apply through GOV.UK or the official UK ETA app. The UK government has published guidance at gov.uk/eta/apply.
Other websites may charge more to process your application. GOV.UK says to avoid websites that imitate government services or charge extra.
The application requires your passport, a photo, and payment. Most applications are decided quickly, though the guidance notes it may take up to three working days.
Wait until you get the confirmation email before you travel. GOV.UK says decisions usually arrive within a day, but you should allow up to three working days.
What Does a UK ETA Cost?
An ETA currently costs £20, according to GOV.UK on 8 May 2026. Check GOV.UK before applying, because fees can change.
You cannot get a refund after you apply. You also cannot get a faster decision by paying another website or app. If a site promises special handling, treat that as a warning sign.
ETA Validity vs. Stay Duration
These two figures are different. They are easy to confuse.
ETA validity: 2 years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During those 2 years, the ETA covers multiple journeys to the UK.
Stay duration: up to 6 months per visit. Each individual visit can last a maximum of 6 months. The 2-year ETA does not mean you can stay for 2 years. It means you can make multiple trips, each up to 6 months, within the 2-year window.
If your passport expires, your ETA expires too, even if the 2-year period has not ended. Apply for a new ETA when you renew your passport.
What an ETA Does NOT Guarantee
An ETA is not an entry visa. It does not guarantee entry to the UK. Border officers make the final decision at the point of arrival. You can hold a valid ETA and still be refused entry.
The ETA is a pre-clearance that means you passed an automated check. It is not a right of entry.
Recent Eligibility Changes (2024–2026)
The list of ETA-eligible countries has changed since the scheme launched. Several nationalities that were originally eligible have since been removed and now require a standard UK visa.
If you are advising others or managing a team with frequent UK travelers, verify each person's current nationality status at GOV.UK before applying.
The countries removed include Colombia (November 2024), Botswana (October 2025), Nauru (December 2025), and Nicaragua and St Lucia (March 2026). Nationals of these countries must now apply for a UK visa instead.
The current GOV.UK eligibility page was last updated on 9 April 2026. That update added Jersey, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man to the destinations covered by an ETA. The page history is worth checking if your passport status has changed or you travel with multiple citizenships.
Practical Checklist for Frequent Travelers
Before your first trip after 25 February 2026: Check whether your nationality requires an ETA. Apply through GOV.UK or the official UK ETA app.
When renewing your passport: Your old ETA is linked to your old passport. When you renew, apply for a new ETA before your next trip.
Traveling with family: Each family member needs their own ETA, including children. The ETA is linked to the individual passport, not a family document.
Before each trip: Confirm your ETA is still valid and linked to the passport you are traveling with.
Always check GOV.UK: Eligibility and fees change. Do not rely on third-party summaries. The GOV.UK guidance page is the only authoritative source.
Frequent UK Visitors and Tax Residency
An ETA covers entry permission. It does not address what happens once you are in the UK.
If you visit the UK frequently, you may also need to track your UK days for Statutory Residence Test purposes. The UK SRT uses a complex framework of automatic tests and sufficient ties. Spending more days than you expect in the UK, across multiple short trips, can affect your tax-residency position.
Jetseen includes a UK SRT tracker that works on the April 6 UK tax year. You log your trips. Jetseen applies the SRT rule engine and shows where you stand.
Jetseen tracks residency days across 13 rule types, including UK tax-year tracking, Schengen 90/180, US Substantial Presence, UAE, and custom rules. It is country-first, built for manual-first trip records, and exports CSV reports for your advisor or personal files.
FAQ

Can I apply for a UK ETA for someone else? Yes, with their consent and passport details. The GOV.UK application allows third-party applications.

My ETA is still valid but I got a new passport. Can I use the old ETA? No. The ETA is linked to the specific passport number it was issued for. Renew your ETA when you renew your passport.
How long does ETA approval take? Most decisions are made quickly. The guidance notes it may take up to three working days. Apply well before your travel date.
Can I visit for 6 months, leave, and return the same day for another 6 months? The 6-month stay limit applies to each visit. Sequential same-day entry for another 6-month stay could be refused by border officers. Entry is always subject to the border officer's discretion.
