UK ETA Rejected or Refused: Can You Apply Again?

A rejection and a refusal are different outcomes. GOV.UK directs applicants to apply again after rejection. The Immigration Rules say someone refused an ETA needs to apply for a visa if they still wish to visit the UK. Source 1

What a refusal means

A refusal should not be treated as an instruction to replace the photo and try again. The opening provisions of Appendix ETA direct a person refused an ETA to the visa route if they still wish to come to the UK. They also distinguish that outcome from a refusal of permission to enter. Source 2

Keep that distinction in your records. Do not rename an ETA refusal as a visa refusal, and do not describe it merely as a technical error. Preserve the actual decision so a qualified adviser can review the right event.

Choosing the correct visa depends on the purpose of travel and personal circumstances. This guide does not predict the result of a visa application or interpret a particular refusal reason.

A pending application is not an approval

GOV.UK tells applicants to wait for the email confirming an ETA before travelling. The email includes a 16-digit reference number. The guidance says decisions usually arrive within a day but can take up to three working days; if no decision arrives after that period, check spam or junk mail before contacting UKVI. These published timings are not a guarantee for an individual departure. Source 1

For planning, treat a flight booking and an immigration decision as separate records. Paying for a ticket cannot turn a pending application into travel permission. If a journey depends on a decision that has not arrived, review the booking's change options and seek official help.

Two example decision records

The following examples illustrate recordkeeping, not real applicants or suggested answers to application questions.

Decision wordingRecord to keepNext question to resolve
Application rejected during identity verificationDecision email, reference and the stated issueWhat must be corrected before a new application?
ETA application refusedFull decision, reference and the stated reasonWhich visa route is appropriate for the intended trip?

The distinction follows the official rejection and refusal guidance above. Avoid a single spreadsheet label such as “ETA failed” because it hides the fact that the next steps differ.

Preserve the trip history without inventing a trip

Keep application events separate from actual border crossings. A planned London visit that you cancel after receiving a decision is not a completed stay. Retain the cancellation alongside the booking instead of entering the original itinerary as if it happened.

If you later make the journey, record the actual arrival and departure dates. When speaking to an adviser, share a chronology with clear labels: application submitted, decision received, booking changed and travel completed. Store the original documents privately; a summary is useful for orientation but should not replace them.

Rule-watch check: October 6, 2026

The official application page, Appendix ETA and Home Office caseworker guidance were checked on October 6, 2026. They distinguish rejection from refusal. This page records that verified distinction; it does not announce a new appeal process or promise that resubmission will succeed. A travel forum's shorthand, a payment receipt or an unfinished application screen does not tell you which outcome you received. What a rejection means Appendix ETA says an application that does not meet the validity requirements is invalid and must be rejected without consideration. The Home Office guidance gives an identity-verification example: an application rejected at that stage does not move to a suitability assessment, and the applicant can make a new application.
