Checked against Sri Lanka Department of Immigration and Emigration sources, BAL, and Fragomen on August 13, 2026.
Sri Lanka now has a Digital Nomad residence-visa category in official immigration material.
The Department of Immigration and Emigration residence visa page lists Digital Nomad as a residence visa category. The linked government PDF says the Digital Nomad Visa is for foreign professionals who want to live and work remotely from Sri Lanka while serving clients or companies based outside Sri Lanka.
Short answer: track visa status, entry and exit dates, renewal timing, document evidence, and foreign-source work records separately. Do not treat a digital nomad visa as a tax or local-employment answer.

Is Sri Lanka's Digital Nomad Visa official?
Yes, the category appears in official Sri Lanka immigration material.
Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration lists Digital Nomad under residence visa categories. Its linked Digital Nomad Visa Category PDF says the route is for remote employment, freelancing, or business ownership where the business is not registered in Sri Lanka and serves clients outside Sri Lanka.
BAL and Fragomen immigration alerts from February 2026 also describe the visa as implemented or available, but the official PDF should be the main source for the draft.
Who is the visa for?
The official PDF says eligible persons include foreign nationals who are 18 or older, plus the spouse and dependents of the main applicant.
It lists the main work boundary this way:
- remote employment
- freelancing
- business ownership
- business not registered in Sri Lanka
- clients or companies based outside Sri Lanka
That boundary should be in your records. A note that says "remote work" is too vague. Keep the employer, client, or business country beside the visa file.
What income and document records should applicants keep?
The official PDF lists a minimum monthly income remittance of USD 2,000 for the main applicant. It also says if the dependent count increases beyond two, an additional USD 500 should be remitted monthly for each.
It lists required documents including:
- filled visa application form
- request letter from the applicant
- passport copy valid for at least six months
- two recent passport-sized photographs
- marriage certificate for spouse
- birth certificate for dependents
- security clearance form
- medical clearance report
- recent police clearance certificate from the home country or country of residence
- international health insurance that covers medical care in Sri Lanka
- recommendation from the Ministry of Digital Economy
- proof of minimum monthly remittance
Do not rely on an old checklist. Download the current official form set before applying.
How long does the visa last?
The official PDF lists the visa duration as one year. It also says holders may reside legally in Sri Lanka for up to 12 months, renewable annually.
That gives remote workers a simple tracking habit:
| Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Visa issue date | Starts the document file |
| Visa expiry date | Drives renewal reminders |
| Sri Lanka entry date | Starts the actual stay record |
| Sri Lanka exit date | Closes the stay record |
| Renewal documents | Keeps later extension review cleaner |
| Tax registration proof for extension | The PDF lists it for visa extension |
The visa document and the country-day record should agree, but they are not the same thing.
What does the fee source say?
Sri Lanka's official visa-fee page lists Digital Nomad under Residence Visa with a fee of 500. The official Digital Nomad PDF is more specific: USD 500 per year for the main applicant, spouse, and each dependent.
Fees can change. Treat the official page and PDF as the current source to verify before applying, not as a budgeting promise.
Can holders work for Sri Lankan employers?
The official PDF says holders are not permitted to engage in local employment within Sri Lanka, and that all income must be earned from foreign sources.
That is one of the most useful records to keep.
Preserve:
- employer or client country
- business registration country
- contract or invoice country
- proof of foreign-source income
- any local Sri Lanka business contact
- notes on whether the activity was work, coworking, tourism, banking, rental, or another permitted benefit
If local work, Sri Lanka-source income, or tax treatment is in play, get professional advice before acting.
How is this different from Sri Lanka tourist ETA?
Treat tourist ETA and the Digital Nomad residence visa as separate records.
Sri Lanka's ETA page has a 2026 tourist visa alert effective from May 25, 2026. That alert is about tourist ETA treatment for listed countries. It is not the Digital Nomad residence visa.
Do not merge them in your notes. Track:
- the visa or ETA type
- application reference
- validity period
- entry and exit dates
- work permissions or limits
- source checked date
A tourist ETA record and a Digital Nomad Visa record answer different questions.
